Gaston Crunelle, although not as famous as Rampal, was a superb flutist with a distinguished performing career.  But it was primarily as a flute teacher that he was known in France.  Despite his chain-smoking of Galloise cigarettes, he lived into his nineties.  There was probably not a professional flutist in France at that time who did not pass through Crunelle's studio at some point in their studies.  It was Crunelle who personally intervened with the Director of the Paris Conservatory to enter me as a flute student -- when I foolishly forgot to turn in the application form before the deadline.  Merci, Gaston.
