Gaston Crunelle, flutist
Professor of Flute (Conservatoire nationale de Paris)

Gaston Crunelle may not have been as famous a performer as Rampal, Moyse, and some others; but as Professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire for three decades, his influence was immense. Also, he was Principal Flute at the Opéra Comique for three decades. Just about every French flutist passed through his studio at one time or another. Whenever they did, they were sure to see him puffing on one of his omnipresent Galloise cigarettes. Despite his addiction, he lived into his 90s. It was Crunelle who succeeded in getting me into the flute class at the Conservatoire -- after I had foolishly forgotten to submit the application form before the deadline.

No, it is not the famous French movie actor Jean Gabin. It was the famous flutist Gaston Crunelle, smoking one of his ever-present (but foul-smelling) Galloise, at Miramar in 1978, reminiscing about the many colorful musicians he had known in his long, long career.
