Rudolf Ganz; pianist, conductor, composer

Swiss conductor, pianist and composer Rudolf Ganz.
A major figure in the world of music between the two world wars, Ganz was a frequent guest conductor in the US of major orchestras, such as the NY Philharmonic. As a pianist, he performed as soloist in the big concerti, such as Brahms and Beethoven. And as a composer, he turned out many works, traditional in style, but superbly crafted nonetheless. After WWII, he became the Director of the Chicago College of Music. One of the many performances in Chicago for which he is still fondly remembered was a performance on a birthday concert -- in which he (in his 80s) and a young woman student performed a virtuoso work for organ by Charles Valentin Alkan for four feet!
