Program of Flute Study
at San Jose State University

Senior Lecturer in Flute
Isabelle Chapuis Starr

All instrumental majors are required to play a placement
audition before a faculty jury. Flute
auditions take place during the first week of school. The exact date is listed
in the Schedule of Classes each semester.
Please call Prof. Isabelle Chapuis Starr at 408-924-4647 (or the School
of Music & Dance at 408-924-4701) for the exact time. Students should be
prepared to perform a substantial piece of their choice. They should also be prepared to perform
various scales. The piece can be in any form (e.g. a sonata, concerto or a concert piece.) One movement from a multi-movement work is
all that is required. The selection
should display the student's current level of technical and artistic
accomplishment. Students may perform
with or without piano accompaniment. Flutists performing works with piano
should make all arrangements with the pianist before the audition. Students do not have to perform auditions
from memory. For details, please call
Prof. Starr before the audition.
Undergraduate students planning to enter SJSU in the fall semester should
file an application for admission during the previous period Nov. 1-30. To enter in the spring semester, apply for admission during the previous
period Aug.
1-31. The deadline for applications for
graduate students is Feb. 1 for admission the following September. Please see the SJSU Catalog for
general requirements for admission to the university. The catalog also contains
useful information on the submission of academic records.

SJSU Flute Master
Class with Prof. Chapuis Starr
Course Requirements:
Prospective students should consult the SJSU Catalog to
determine specific course requirements for a Bachelor of Music, a Bachelor of
Arts, or a Master of Arts degree. An undergraduate student majoring in flute
must take a minimum of eight semesters of flute lessons to earn a bachelor's
degree. A graduate student majoring in flute must take a minimum of six credits
of flute lessons to earn a master's degree.
Performing Ensemble
Requirements:
All undergraduate students taking private instrumental
lessons must participate in a large performing ensemble (such as Symphony
Orchestra, Symphonic Band, and Concert Choir.) The large ensemble should be appropriate
to the student’s emphasis or concentration.
Please contact the directors of these performing organizations for
in-formation on admission and participation.
Final Auditions:
At the end of each semester, undergraduate flute students
are required to perform before a jury of the woodwind faculty. The repertoire
will be determined by Prof. Chapuis Starr.
Senior Recital or
Graduate Recital:
In the last semester of applied study, an instrumental major must give either a public recital or an audition before a faculty jury. All B.M. students must perform both junior and senior recitals. Please contact Prof. Chapuis Starr for detailed information. To gain more experience in performance, all students are encouraged to give junior recitals, chamber music concerts, concerto performances, etc.
Students receive one studio
flute lesson per week with Prof. Isabelle Chapuis Starr.
Flutists are encouraged to enroll in the Woodwind Chamber
Music Master Class (Music 160L) taught by Prof. Chapuis Starr. Students prepare and per-form various
woodwind chamber pieces. A faculty piano accompanist is provided. Students
perform these works in front of other members of the class —who may offer
comments. The class also includes a
flute choir. At the end of the school year, students perform in Tutti Flutti—a concert of flute chamber music and flute choir music.

“Tutti
Flutti”
The school offers a limited number of scholarships. Please
inquire at the Music Office for an application and for information concerning
scholarship auditions (which usually take place in Feb. or March.)
Students are expected to
have their own instruments for practicing and performances. However, the School of Music and Dance owns
several fine flutes, piccolos, an alto flute and a bass flute. These instruments are available to students
for limited periods and for special performances.
Practice rooms are
available in the School of Music and Dance on a first-come first-served basis.
